Pickleball Rules: What Not to Do

📅 2026-07-12 ✍️ Gym Aesthetics Asia Pickleball

Introduction

Pickleball has a unique set of rules that can catch new players off guard. While the game is easy to learn, certain rules — especially the two-bounce rule and kitchen rules — are frequently misunderstood. This guide covers the most common rule violations seen on Hong Kong courts and how to avoid them.

The Kitchen: What NOT to Do

The non-volley zone (kitchen) is the 7-foot area on both sides of the net. Here are the cardinal rules:

1. No Volleying in the Kitchen You cannot volley (hit the ball out of the air) while standing in the kitchen or on the kitchen line. This is the most common fault among new players in Hong Kong. If any part of your foot touches the kitchen line during a volley, it is a fault.

2. No Following Your Volley into the Kitchen After hitting a volley, your momentum cannot carry you into the kitchen. You must maintain your balance and stay out. This is called a "momentum fault."

3. You CAN Enter the Kitchen Many beginners think they cannot enter the kitchen at all. This is wrong. You may enter the kitchen any time — but only to play a ball that has bounced. Once the ball bounces, you can step in and hit it.

The Two-Bounce Rule

After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before any player can volley. This means: 1. The serve must bounce in the receiver's court 2. The return of serve must bounce on the serving side 3. Only after these two bounces can players volley (hit the ball out of the air)

This rule is frequently violated by eager beginners who rush to the net too quickly. Wait for the second bounce before moving in.

Serving Mistakes

1. Foot Faults At the moment of contact, at least one foot must be behind the baseline. Your foot cannot touch or cross the baseline until after you hit the ball. In Hong Kong, many players serving from the deuce court forget this rule.

2. Serving to the Wrong Area In singles, the serve must land in the correct service court (diagonal). In doubles, the serving team switches sides after winning a point, but the server continues serving from the alternating side.

3. Illegal Serve Motion Under USAPA rules, the serve must be made with an underhand motion. The paddle head must be below the wrist at contact, and the contact point must be below the waist.

Common On-Court Etiquette Violations

  • Walking behind active courts: Hong Kong courts are often close together. Wait for a point to finish before walking behind a court.
  • Loud grunting during play: A competitive atmosphere is fine, but excessive noise can be distracting in indoor venues.
  • Not calling the score clearly: The server must call the score loudly enough for the receiver to hear before serving.

Conclusion

Understanding these rules will make you a better player and a more welcome participant in Hong Kong's pickleball community. When in doubt, remember: the kitchen is for bounced balls only, and the ball must bounce twice before you can smash it. Play fair, play smart!
